Product FAQs

Can I use this heavy duty plastic for windows other than insulation?

Yes — the 6 mil vinyl is versatile enough for porch and patio enclosures, greenhouse coverings, furniture protection, paint drop cloths, and temporary repairs on shed or auto glass. The 48" width covers most standard windows without seaming, and the 48" x 84" size works well for full-length glass doors.

How do I choose the right size plastic sheet for my window?

Pick a sheet that's at least 2 inches wider and taller than your window frame opening. This gives you enough material to attach it to the frame and trim the excess cleanly. The 48" x 72" sheet covers most standard medium-to-large windows; go with 48" x 84" for tall windows or glass doors. When in doubt, size up — the vinyl cuts easily with scissors.

What thickness of plastic is best for window insulation?

For a single-season shrink kit, 1–2 mil is standard — but it tears easily and hazes over time. For a durable, reusable window cover, 6 mil is the sweet spot: thick enough to hold its shape and block drafts effectively, yet still flexible enough to cut with scissors and handle without cracking. RuxEco's 6 mil clear plastic sheet is noticeably heavier than anything you'll find at a hardware store in the window film section.

Will this vinyl sheet arrive with wrinkles or creases?

The sheet ships folded, so some fold lines are normal. For indoor storm windows where clarity matters, lay the sheet flat in a warm room for a few hours before installing — the vinyl relaxes and most creases disappear. Alternatively, use a hair dryer on low heat to gently warm and smooth the surface. If near-optical clarity is critical, the sheet performs best in well-lit rooms where minor fold lines aren't noticeable.

What's the difference between this sheet and the full Interior Storm Window Kit?

This listing is the vinyl sheet only — no framing hardware included. If you already have RuxEco Framing Strips installed from a previous season, just replace the vinyl sheet here. If you're starting from scratch and need everything — vinyl plus the snap-lock framing system — go with the full Interior Storm Window Kit instead.
